Pres. Gerald Ford, 1913-2006

Gerald Ford was president well before I could vote, and long before I began voting Republican. Like a lot of Americans, I've known him mainly as the butt of jokes. As I have become more aware of the history of the time, I have come to recognize other qualities. Here's to a man who took on a tough, thankless task, did it well, and always carried himself with dignity. A lot of others are saying it better than I can. Here they are:

Tigerhawk offers a look back to another time.

Blue Crab remembers "a better man that the media portrayed."

Liberal Values talks about football and old school ties.

Right Wing Nut House recalls his encounter with the former president, and Ford's ability to put the past behind him.

Meanwhile,

Matthew Yglesias doesn't appear to have much respect for the dead, and can't keep his politics out of it.

Wonkette also isn't waiting till after the funeral.

Although I have not thoroughly checked media sources, I have yet to find any comments by 2008 Presidential hopefuls.

Of others I have read, very nice comments about President Ford.

He became President in a very troubled time and did his best to bring the nation back together.

May he rest in peace, he lived a long and honorable life and deserves praise for his service.

Gerald Ford's pardon of Richard Nixon never bothered me as much as it did some other people, even though I despised Richard Nixon. Mostly I remember GF as a nice, bland, polite guy who didn't accomplish a great deal as president. But, unlike the execrable Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford kept his own counsel as ex-presidents are supposed to do, which makes him a gentleman in my eyes. We need a little more of that.

Somebody seriously needs to teach the left about class and respect.

Pres. Ford's biggest mistake wasn't Pres. Nixon's pardon by the way.....it was his appointment of Justice John Stevens, and we are still paying for it 31 years later.
